My computer was custom made for me in2004.
Intel Celeron cpu - 2.53 GHZ
Micro-Star MS-6758 motherboard
Bios-American Megatrends V2.4
smbios version-2.3
1.00 GB ram
250 GB Hard Drive
cd-dvd player burner
cd-player burner
cd-dvd player
Question, can I use the present motherboard and bios with a faster more up to date cpu?
To directly address your question my first move would be to GET AWAY FROM THOSE CELERON CPU's
The celeron is a piece of junk developed primarily to reduce the cost of machines for the consumer market.
I would NEVER recommend that anyone ever purchase a computer using one, IMHO it is better to use a slightly slower Pentium than a Celeron.
Your board does support better CPUs, although I do not see where it will support the Dual or Quad cores, MSI claims it will support the P4 which these days is not very expensive.
My Advise: Upgrade your CPU to a P4 and a good AGP video card. Personally I have been pretty satisfied with NVidia chipped cards.
My present and last cards Gforce 8500GT and Gforce FX4200 were both fast and low cost. (Both were under $50).
A good video card make a world of difference in a computer, so if it is within your budget be sure and upgrade both the CPU and Video Card.
One AGP slot supports 8x/4x at 0.8V (AGP 3.0) or 4x at 1.5V(3.3V is not supported).
Five 32-bit v2.3 Master PCI bus slots (support 3.3v/5v PCI bus interface).
It appears this motherboard has been renumbered by MSI and is now called
875P Neo-LSR/ FIS2R
According to MSI this board's specifications are ...
Supports Intel® P4 Northwood/Prescott/P4 Extreme Edition processors.(Socket 478)
Supports up 3.2GHz/800MHz and higher speed
Be Carefull of the Memory Speed Matrix below I tried to paste it in but it got messed up (should have gone horizontal and so it is read...
I ordered a Intel Pentium 4 3.0 Prescott 3.0GHz, a matched set of ram to increase to 4 GB, and a GeForce 9400 GT video card. I'll let you know how it works out.
I checked the specs. on the board, MS - 6758.
Slots
• One AGP slot supports 8x/4x at 0.8V (AGP 3.0) or 4x at 1.5V (3.3v is not supported)
• Five PCI 2.2 32-bit Master PCI Bus slots. (support 3.3v / 5v PCI bus interface)
Did I read something wrong? When I installed the wireless card (Linksys) it was for a PCI slot.
You mentioned you ordered a GeForce 9400 series card, according to my information those are PCIe (not the same as AGP or PCI).
I fear that card will not work on that MotherBoard...
I could be wrong about the 9400 being PCIe but I recommend you call the place you are ordering from and make sure it is AGP and not PCIe, you may have to change your video card order to a different model.
Manta,
You where right on the video card. I knew that my board was PCI, but when I ordered the card I over looked the e in back of PCI. I ordered a XFX HD4650 for the AGP slot and everything is working just fine.
With the CPU, RAM, and video card update, I feel like I have a new computer. I upgraded to Dell 22" monitor a year ago (I run 1680x1050 resolution). I'm all set for a long winter of gaming.
Thank you very much for all your help!
You're very welcome, and if you haven't tried them yet I would recommend Hulu.com and netflix.com for your other entertainment needs.
Hulu is free and Netflix can be thoroughly enjoyed with one of their minimal accounts at $8.95 mo.
I've been using both for months now. I am able to watch all my usual programs like Lost and Heroes on demand (the new episodes are usually available the day after they aire on commercial TV), the commercials are extremely short (about 30 sec as opposed to 5 min with regular CATV).
2 months ago I ran an HDMI from my PC to out BigScreen in theliving room and now enjoy saving almost $80 a month that we were paying to the cable company.
I had some 1 month free certificates for netflix but I gave them all away, I will post it here next time I get some more in for anyone who is interested in trying it.
Hulu is always free though so give it a try if you haven't...
<SLAP!> Off Topic heheh Sorry I just really like those services as you can tell.
Glad your upgrades went well, I thought they would, I have been using a similar MSI board for the last year. I've built about a dozen PCs using MSI motherboards and have been please with their balance of good preformance, reliablility and price.
Once again you are welcome, tell your friends about us.
